In China the firecracker is used for grand openings, marriage, or in the temple for special rituals.
The idea here is that it is used like dynamite, or an explosion, to blow away the negative Chi,
and also act as an announcement to the neighborhood about the event which is taking place.
In the temple there are always spirits around which can be negative as well as positive.
So when you are doing any special ceremony there is always a good idea to use a firecracker during the
ceremony, for the purpose of blasting the negativity away from the area so that it is clean of bad spirits,
in order for good spirits to be able to join the ceremony.
In a wedding, firecrackers are used the same way, to clear negative Chi as well as jealous Chi.
The Idea is to keep jealous ghosts (spirits) from being able to attack during the wedding ceremony.
If they do, the female can get her period and that is bad luck. In such a case the marriage will not last
too long; either there will be divorce or the female will become a widow.
The firecracker has strong power to blow away evil Chi. So it is a good idea to hang even a fake
firecracker in the area which is Shia (negative or abnormal) because in today's world, one is
usually not allowed to set off a real firecracker. Now if you CAN set off a real firecracker during
a wedding ceremony or grand opening ceremony, do so by all means, but if you cannot, use a fake one
to the same effect.
History of the Firecracker - The Ceremonial Bamboo
You may be surprised to learn that originally the firecracker was not used as dynamite.
A jointed bamboo stick, when it is on fire, explodes because the air heats up between the joints
of bamboo. This causes an explosion, and it was because of that fact that the exploding bamboo,
the firecracker, as we now call it, was used - but only for ceremonial purposes.
The translation is:
"The explosion of the bamboo announces the peace," or,
"This makes the peace and good luck for the beginning of something new."
However, in the Sung Dynasty, the exploding bamboo inspired the creation of more powerful exploding
techniques based on the Ceremonial Bamboo - and dynamite was invented.
After World War II, so many people were injured and killed by explosions from guns and bombs,
that firecrackers were outlawed in most parts of Asia, so these days the fake firecracker is employed
to represent the real one. It in fact holds the same power because of the focus of intention used during
the ritural or cure.
