Lung Ta - 'Lung' means 'wind' and 'Lung Ta' means Windhorse. These colorful papers with prayers on them are used to spread prayers throughout the four corners of the earth by going to a high place and, after a ritual or prayers, tossing them into the air, letting the winds carry them high into the sky. When the paper finally comes back to the earth, the prayer papers dissolve into the earth and blesses the earth. The lung ta papers measure 2.5" X 2.5" and come in packs of approximately 500 sheets.
The most astonishing scene of this I ever saw was in that famous film 'Wind Horse'. The Director told me that when they were at a the top famous pass in the Himalayan Mountains poised for the lung ta scene, the winds suddenly picked up with great bursts giving the sense that they were sent from the gods themselves, and they were able to film the most amazing footage of lung ta being tossed into the wind, swirling high into the air.
