There are different traditions as far as shrines are concerned . In Japan, for instance, simplicity seems to be greatly appreciated. I have been told by many Buddhist monks that it is a very good thing to put very nice objects on your shrine, because 'what you put on the shrine are actual offerings'. Each spiritual tradition has its own requirements for a proper shrine or altar, and it is to be taken very seriously with understanding of exactly what one is doing. This is such an act of love! Look carefully into your spiritual tradition to see what is correct. Here we have gathered some essential objects as well as some lovely adornments for your altar or shrine. Some of you have asked for wicks for the butter lamps. The best I can say is that the monks I know make them themselves. You can too - take 100% cotton balls, and pull them apart and simply twist them until you have the length you need. Sometimes they use a sliver of bamboo in the middle, so in that case just twirl the cotton around the bamboo sliver. It takes just a little practice - a few minutes - to discover that you too can make great butter lamp wicks!
